The original platform arrived in 2004
adidas records 2004 as the launch year of one of its best-known campaigns. Stories of athletes’ fears, failures and achievements gave the line evidence rather than presenting optimism as an unsupported claim.
A durable platform needs a recurring human tension and a credible brand role. It should be broad enough for multiple stories but specific enough to guide selection.
The 2021 relaunch used archive and new perspectives
The company relaunched Impossible Is Nothing in 2021 for a new generation of athletes, artists and consumers. Documentary-style home footage and accounts from friends or fellow athletes offered less familiar views of highly visible people.
A relaunch should add information or perspective. Repeating a famous line with contemporary casting is rarely sufficient.
Partners carried different proofs
Athletes and cultural figures allowed the platform to travel across sports and audiences. Each person still needed a clear reason to belong within the central idea.
Global teams should define selection criteria, rights, safeguarding, local relevance and the evidence behind each story. A large roster increases coordination demands as quickly as it increases reach.
The platform adapted to major moments
adidas continued to use the idea around events including the FIFA World Cup. The central attitude provided continuity while the specific audience insight and production changed.
International adaptation should preserve the strategic proposition and permit local teams to choose relevant voices, formats and barriers. Literal translation is not a strategy.
What brands can learn
Before reviving a platform, test current recognition, cultural meaning and fit with the offer. Define what remains fixed and what must change for the present audience.
ICON IMAGE helps brands develop and localise campaign platforms, partnerships and evidence across international markets.
