IKEA Democratic Design: Turning Five Product Tests into a Brand Position

IKEA’s Democratic Design framework is useful because it translates a broad promise into five product questions: form, function, quality, sustainability and low price. The position is therefore visible in development decisions rather than confined to advertising language.

01

The framework links design with affordability

IKEA Museum describes Democratic Design through five dimensions: form, function, quality, sustainability and low price. The combination matters. A visually appealing object that fails on use, durability or affordability does not fulfil the promise.

A strong position helps teams resolve trade-offs. It should influence specifications, sourcing, packaging, retail and communication, not merely provide a phrase for a campaign.

02

The 1995 PS collection made the idea explicit

The first IKEA PS collection launched in Milan in 1995 under the theme of Democratic Design. IKEA Museum describes it as a renewal of the Scandinavian design tradition.

A collection or pilot can make a strategy concrete. It gives the organisation a bounded place to test products, language and customer response before applying the principles more widely.

03

Flat-pack is part of the commercial system

Development considers manufacturing, transport, assembly and life at home together. Packaging is therefore connected to price and distribution rather than treated as an afterthought.

Companies entering a new market should examine the entire cost-to-serve. A global product can lose its position if freight, installation, returns or local regulations make the final experience too expensive or difficult.

04

Five dimensions expose real tensions

Sustainability, quality and low price can pull decisions in different directions. The framework does not remove those tensions; it makes them visible and gives teams a common language for evaluating them.

Claims should be supported at product level. Broad language about access or sustainability needs evidence in materials, service life, repair, supply and price.

05

What other brands can apply

Convert the brand promise into a small set of decision criteria. Require product, operations and marketing teams to show how each launch performs against them and where compromises were made.

ICON IMAGE helps companies turn positioning into market-entry, product communication and local execution standards across countries.
