Nike Breaking2: What a Controlled Sporting Attempt Taught Brand Marketers

Nike’s Breaking2 project brought Eliud Kipchoge, Lelisa Desisa and Zersenay Tadese to Monza in May 2017 for a controlled attempt to run a marathon in under two hours. Kipchoge finished in 2:00:25, short of the target but close enough to make the attempt historically significant.

01

A precise target organised the story

Sub-two hours gave every technical and human detail a common purpose. Viewers could understand success, failure and progress without needing specialist product knowledge.

02

The attempt linked product and athlete development

Footwear, pacing, course design, nutrition and preparation were presented as parts of one system. The brand had a reason to discuss innovation while athletes remained central to the narrative.

03

Rules were part of credibility

The controlled conditions meant the performance was not eligible as an official world record. Clear communication of that distinction protects trust and allows the experiment to be valued on its actual terms.

04

Near-success strengthened the narrative

Missing the target by 25 seconds did not erase the achievement. A serious innovation story can show an unresolved problem, provided the brand reports the outcome accurately and avoids rewriting the brief.

05

The practical lesson

Set a measurable challenge, publish the conditions, appoint independent technical voices and prepare content for every outcome. The event should generate useful evidence even when the headline target is missed.
