Use paid media for controlled reach
Paid media can target defined audiences, sequence messages and send prospects to a relevant market page. It is useful when a company must build initial awareness or test which proposition earns attention.
The landing experience, availability and sales follow-up must be ready before scale. Buying attention for an offer that cannot respond creates waste and can damage trust.
Use earned media for editorial relevance
Journalists choose stories because they matter to their readers. A new entrant needs evidence: a material launch, local investment, credible data, customer relevance or a qualified spokesperson.
Earned coverage can add context and third-party scrutiny, but timing and wording are not controlled. A press release does not guarantee publication.
Do not disguise payment
Sponsored content, influencer work and media partnerships require clear commercial disclosure under applicable rules. The ICC Code calls for marketing communications to be identifiable and truthful.
Keep editorial outreach and paid placements distinct in planning, contracts and reporting. Transparency protects the audience and the company’s reputation.
Connect the channels around one proposition
Use research and media questions to sharpen paid messages; use paid distribution to extend a genuinely useful report or announcement. Both channels should point to the same evidence and next step.
Local teams should review claims, terminology and audience assumptions. A message that performs in one market may be irrelevant or restricted in another.
Measure decisions rather than vanity totals
For paid media, track qualified visits, enquiries and cost by audience. For earned media, review relevance, accuracy, referral behaviour and conversations created.
ICON IMAGE builds market-entry communications around evidence, local media judgement, campaign distribution and commercial follow-up.
